Douglas Coghill is a Tasmania-based luthier and professional violist who is passionate about creating and sourcing quality instruments and bows at reasonable prices. He brings a rare player-maker insight to every aspect of his practice. Douglas' work is highly regarded, and he is regularly commissioned by both professional and amateur players to build violins, violas and cellos. Douglas has been mentored in instrument-making in Italy by the renowned Michael Stürzenhofecker. Examples of his work currently sit with members of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Australian String Quartet, Australian National Academy of Music, Elder Conservatorium of Music, Van Diemen's Band and Hobart Chamber Orchestra.​ An accomplished violist, Douglas has performed and recorded extensively as chamber, orchestral, solo and contemporary musician, working throughout Australia and in the USA, Canada, Russia, China and Singapore. Since 2016 Douglas has held the position of Tutti Violist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Douglas studied performance at the Australian National Academy of Music and Victorian College of the Arts, where he won the John Gaitskell Mensa Memorial Prize. Douglas has appeared as soloist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Hobart Chamber Orchestra, Discovery Orchestra, Melbourne U3A Orchestra and Australian Doctors Orchestra.
